K-Pop Thoughts, Welcome to the Stage

Welcome to the Stage: DayChild

Debuting on May 6, 2024, the new group DayChild has entered the scene with the single album [illumination]. The group was announced on December 5, 2023, and fans waited patiently for this, the first of hopefully many releases from these four talented young men.

I was lucky enough to get to go to their debut showcase in Hongdae on May 6th, and I’d love to share my experience, as well as my thoughts on the group and the music, with you.

Let’s take a look at each of the four members before we get into the single album.

“illumination” Music Video and Song Review

If you want a really fun, light-hearted song for the summer, look no further than “illumination”. The music video mirrors the energetic feeling we hear in the music, with bright colors and fun sets that match the members’ youthful vibe. I love the wardrobe choices, as they work well to show off each member’s charms and personality while also matching well with the backgrounds and other props.

The vocals and rap are very good in this song, showcasing each member’s unique tone. While K’s bright tone matches his bright smile and energy, and Intae’s huskier voice matches his more chic visuals, Siwoo’s smooth voice almost contrasts his sharper features perfectly, and Eden’s charismatic tone seems to defy his position as the youngest member. And all four of these voices blend beautifully together as a group.

Here’s my video of their first performance of “illumination” at their showcase…

The only problem I could maybe see with this song is that, while the vocals are stunning, the instrumentals almost drown them out at a few points throughout the song. A bit of a better balance might give the members more of a chance to prove their talent as rookie vocalists.

I love this song, and I really wish for this group to find success so they can share their talents with so many more people.

DayChild!
Can you feel the light
우릴 비춰주잖아
Following us day and night
Always know in your mind, mind
눈 앞에 있어 또 하루종일 maybe
We all belong together
Will you know the answer?

Hello, 마치 원래
알고 있었다는 듯 말은 건네
You got that 네 하루 속에
만나 본 적 있을거야 이미 one day
어쩌면 인사도 useless
오래 전부터 we’ve been knew this
Good days, whether bad days
우린 함께했지 woo-ya-ya

보이지 않게 돼버렸던 빛도
어느덧 다시 감싸고
Haven’t we met before
익숙한 그 느낌도
Bet you know

Can you feel the light
우릴 비춰주잖아
Following us day and night
Always know in your mind, mind
눈 앞에 있어 또 하루종일 maybe
We all belong together
Will you know the answer?
너의 하루 속에
저 불빛이 들어 올 때
Following us day and night
Always know in your mind, mind
네 곁에 있어 all day
저 불빛이 들어 올 때
Following us day and night
Always know in your mind, mind

Flight to flow 우린 누비지 거리를 늘
가끔 더 많은 걸 바란 우리는 늘려
Price more than full 값어친 delicious
Feel this light 빛나지 나의 비전
Mind blows up 이젠 보이지 빛이
Rhymes feel good 다 집어삼킬 듯이
Like kick & snare 그 사이 비추는 beam

Feel this light, our vision shines
Mind blows up, I can see the light now
Rhymes feel good like we’ll devour everything

The B Side

서로 다른 시간의 밤이 함께하는 그 순간까지 (Same Time)

At the showcase, we learned that this song was actually the members’ favorite, and they would have loved for this to have been the title track as well. While it does have a laughably long title, the song is really great, and the choreography is great as well.

I love the vibes of this song, as it’s a bit more chilled out than “illumination,” and lets the members all show off their skills a bit more, in my opinion. They really smile into the song in a way that feels really genuine. I think if they were to promote this song as well as their title, they would get a really good response for it. Siwoo’s high notes are so satisfying, and I love the bit at the end where they all fall down for the final pose.

Again, there’s the problem with the balance in the mixing, but other than that, I really like this song. The performance is so sweet, and the choreography suits them and their youthful, bouncy concept.

Final Thoughts

I love this group’s bright energy, and I hope that they receive as much praise and support as they deserve throughout their debut. I’m glad I got to go and cheer for them at their showcase. Below, I’ll leave some extra group photos I took during the showcase, behind their official group photo…

Honestly, I hope you all go and watch their music video, and dance practice, and fanchant videos, leave a like, and comment telling them that Annie sent you. I’d love to help them grow their audience so that their next promotions can be even bigger!

So, with that, please leave in the comments down below what you like most about DayChild’s debut. And if you don’t want to miss any of my upcoming posts, be sure you’re subscribed, and follow me on Instagram to keep up with all of the events I’m going to as they’re happening.

K-Pop Roundup

K-Pop Roundup: Top Ten Releases of March 2024

This has been an incredible month for music here in Korea, and now that I’m living in Seoul, I’ve been able to do a lot more with the music, when I have the time to listen to it. Yes, this is incredibly late, but I still wanted to share this with you.

But let’s keep this brief. Here are my top ten (plus three Honorable Mentions) releases in K-pop for this month. As usual, click the song title to take you directly to the track on Spotify, or find the playlist below! Let’s get into it!

10.

Wendy – “Wish You Hell”

As much as I love Wendy, I just don’t feel like this song fits her personal concept or her voice as well as other songs could have. The video and the choreography is great, so much that it made the list at all, but it’s not my favorite Wendy song. Others on the album could have placed higher on the list had they been the title tracks. But it does place on the list because I absolutely love the video concept, and Wendy looks amazing.

9.

xikers – “We Don’t Stop”

This is just such a fun song, and the video is so simple at times, and complex at others. The late-90s vibes are strong with this one, and all these boys look and sound amazing in this song. It’s not my usual style, but it’s so fun that I can’t stop listening to it. The breakdown in the last chorus is way too good. If you like a more hiphop style of music, this might be the song for you this month.

8.

YooA – “Rooftop”

This song is serving. I love YooA, and this song suits her so well. Her solo releases have been beautifully and elegantly sexy, and this is no exception. This edgier look for her mixed with the almost 90s pop diva vibe from the song is perfect for her, and a great release for the month. I mostly love watching this video over and over to just admire how beautiful she looks, but because the song isn’t fully my style (even though I do love it), this song placed pretty low on the ranking.

7.

HIGHLIGHT – “BODY”

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting this song to slap as hard as it does. It’s so catchy, and perfectly campy as our first release from this veteran group in a long time. They’re so unserious as a group, and I love when older groups know how to be playful while looking incredibly sexy at the same time. The vocals are so strong, and the vibes are so fun, but this couldn’t place any higher because I just loved the other songs so much.

6.

Purple Kiss – “BBB”

I am extremely biased about how much I love this song, since I heard it the weekend before release at their spoiler busking event in Gangnam. Purple Kiss’ vocals are always top tier, and they’re killing this girl crush concept. The bad girl look suits them so well. These dreamy vocals are the biggest part of the reason for this song placing so high on the ranking this month.

5.

Chungha – “EENIE MEENIE (Feat. Hongjoong of ATEEZ)”

Queen Chungha is back! Do I think some of the wardrobe choices in this video are silly? Of course. But the vocals and choreography are incredible. And with the original Captain Hongjoong of ATEEZ featuring, there was no way this could flop. But Chungha definitely carries this song on her own, allowing her strong performance skills to shine as she sings and raps while doing this intricate choreography. I’m obsessed with her, and with her dance crew.

4.

DAY6 – “Welcome to the Show”

THEY’RE BACK. I’m obsessed with this song, and I’m so glad to have more music from Day6. I love this video concept of imagining your life playing out on a stage and becoming everything you ever wanted. Did I cry while watching this through a few times? No, absolutely not… But this is one of the sweetest songs I’ve heard in a LONG time. And that’s not even mentioning just how great these men look after coming back from their military service. This had to rank just under the three songs I felt with my SOUL this month, but that doesn’t mean it’s not just as good if not better!

3.

The New Six (TNX) – “FUEGO”

Another amazing comeback, and I am honestly so proud of The New Six for how hard they worked through these promotions. With this being the first of their promotions that saw member Junhyuk fully participating since debut, they gathered a lot of attention for the strength of their performances. And that, plus how catchy the chorus of the song is, is what brings it up to Number 3 this month. Kyungjun’s deep voice doing the iconic “1, 2, 3, Fuego” part is burned into my brain.

2.

The Boyz – “Nectar”

Almost at my Number 1 spot for the month, we have my babies, The Boyz. This song is so amazing, as I mentioned in my Album Review post, but I think it was the fact that it is harder to dance along to that moved it down to the Number 2 spot. But you better believe that I’m going to be trying to get into their concert in July so I can see this song live! I think the beautiful vocals and complicated emotions of the video really pushed it higher up on my list.

Honorable Mention 1.

NCT DREAM – “Smoothie”

This one would have probably made it higher up on the list if the chorus of the song hadn’t been so damned repetitive. They repeated the title “Smoothie” so many times that I lost count and the word lost all meaning. But the rest of the song and the choreography are amazing. Also… Are they killers? I don’t quite understand the music video at all.

Honorable Mention 2.

BAE173 – “Fifty-Fifty”

Did I have to reconsider my entire ranking just because I wanted to feature this song and group higher? Absolutely. The visual effects in this video are stunning and really caught my attention, not to mention the visuals of the members themselves. I just had stronger feelings for so many other songs this month, but please go and listen to this song, watch this video, and stan this group because they’re super talented.

Honorable Mention 3.

VCHA – “Only One”

These girls have grown as performers so much in such a short time, but this barely counts as K-pop, mostly counting on this list because they are a JYP group. I do love the song, because they have such great vocals and the song is so catchy.

1.

AMPERS&ONE – “Broken Heart”

No one is surprised that I chose this, I’m sure. As I mentioned in my Album Review post, this song is just so catchy and I can’t keep myself from dancing along to it any time I hear it. I can still feel the booming bass from the showcase. I fully support these boys in anything they do, now and in the future. I can’t imagine loving any of the other songs on this list as much as I love this one. The vocals, the dance, the stage presence, and the visual effects in the music video are incomparable.

Final Thoughts

Once again, this was a very hard list to narrow down. I felt like I was choosing between my children, because I was so emotionally invested in the success of these top three songs. If you disagree with where I ranked your favorite songs of the month, please let me know in the comments down below.

AMPERS&ONE

Debut Date: November 15, 2023
Debut Song: On And On
Company: FNC Entertainment

“Broken Heart” Music Video Review & Lyrics

I’m a big fan of the visuals this concept is immediately serving, with the crystal clear closeups of each member while they’re in their hockey game. The CG for the hockey puck are so interesting, and fit so well with the concept. The vocals and raps are so strong, and the choreography is so intense at the same time, sticking with FNC’s usual “let’s do everything and do it well” vibe.

While this song isn’t exactly my usual favorite style, I still love it. It has a heavy bass line driving the instrumentals, like your heartbeat when you fall in love at first sight, popping out of your chest. The performance is very strong, led by Kamden in the chorus. I fell in love with the sound of the song immediately the first time I heard it, and I just knew the performance would knock me off my feet. (Spoiler Alert: It did.) Jiho and Siyun have some of my favorite vocal tones of any rookie group these days, and you should already know I have a soft spot for Kamden and Brian from their Boys Planet days. Kyrell, Mackiah, and Seungmo are also possibly one of my favorite 5th gen maknae lines. These guys have worked hard to make it, and AMPERS&ONE has done just that. I hope this comeback brings them their first win.

I will admit, I don’t fully understand the Bluetooth Connecting bits of the music video story… If anyone has an idea about that, or wants to theorize with other fans, please leave a comment down below!

Head spinning, I’m a mess
You’re One top, I guess
It’s a Broken Heart
Heart Pumping, pang
Beating hard
Like a broken brake, Run and run
When I see you I’m gone
It’s a Broken Heart

Broken, broken, broken
(Heart, heart)
Broken, broken, broken
(Heart, heart)
Broken, broken, broken
(Heart, heart)
Broken, broken
It’s a Broken Heart

The Rest of the Album

With only three songs on the album total, there are only two other songs for us to talk about. Click on the titles to take you to the tracks on Spotify.

Crazy Stupid Fun

This song immediately feels fun with a touch of nostalgia for the 90s in the instrumentation. It’s definitely the song you dance to at a party with your friends. The vocalists absolutely kill the melodies, and the rap flow is so interesting and clean that I was leaning closer to the speakers so I could hear it clearer. This is generally just a really fun song, very upbeat and made for dancing.

Someday

This is one of the cutest songs I’ve ever heard, and I though their “Sheesh” from the debut album was cute. There’s a bounce in the melody plus the whistling descant that gives the song a sense of innocence, and then the lyrics are so sweet. “Someday, when I find my girlfriend… Someday, I could be your boyfriend.” Plus Mackiah’s accent in the bridge? Perfection in the form of a song. I hope they perform this as their B-side during promotions, because it’s very cute and will 100% bring in new fans.

The Showcase

I was lucky enough to be chosen to go to the Pre-Showcase for AMPERS&ONE’s comeback, which was held the day before on March 25th. I was in the 5th row, just right of center, and I would have had a perfect view had it not been for the girl’s hair in front of me. Therefore, I really couldn’t see Mackiah and Siyun (my bias wreckers) that well unless they were standing.

But I’d love to share some of the videos and photos I took at the showcase here for you to enjoy. Please feel free to ignore my voice croaking in the background; I’ve been fighting laryngitis for the past month.

They opened with a performance of their debut song, “On And On.”

They then introduced the three tracks on their album, telling a little about each one, and then finally we got some more performances!

“Someday”

“Sheesh”

Oh, and we also got our official fandom name! “앤디어(ANDEAR)”
“A combined word of “AND” that links AMPERS&ONE and its fans, and the word “DEAR” connoting beloved and precious, symbolizing that AMPERS&ONE and the fans are always preciously connected to each other.”

I’ll be honest, the live fan reactions to the fandom name were a little awkward, as it seemed like most of us at the showcase had been hoping for one of the other five name choices we had been able to vote on, but as the members said, we’ll get used to it the more we all use the name.

Then, finally, “Broken Heart”

And then we got to say goodbye to them as we left the venue, which was very nice, as they did their best to make eye contact and say goodbye to every single fan on the way out.

Overall, I had a really great time at the showcase, and I hope this amazingly talented group sees some real success with this comeback.

Final Thoughts

So basically this album is perfect, and you should listen to all three tracks, go watch the music video, performance videos, and any other content they release during their promotions. Let me know down in the comments what you think about AMPERS&ONE’s comeback

“Nectar” Music Video Review & Lyrics

As the music video begins, I can’t tell what emotions I’m feeling, but the visuals are stunning. It’s sweet once you get into it, but I’m still thrown by the on-an-off sad vibes. The school uniforms and the overall student vibes are cute, and definitely push the video more towards the sweetly positive side… and then we get the bridge. We get more of the “Hurt Me Less” FILM vibes popping in and out, which adds so much depth to the music video. I love the behind-the-scenes clips at the end of the video, where we get to see the members just having fun and acting like high school students again.

Upon my second watch, I got to pay attention to more of the symbols and details. We get to see so much of their characters in their solo scenes, showing what each member-student is into. The Q-Juyeon handshake is super cute, and I missed it the first time through. But I think the bits of ‘Hurt Me Less’ sadness comes from… someone being missing. We can see it in the little altar set up, seen clearly at 0:38, and a bit in the boat Juyeon is sitting in at 0:41. They’re mourning the loss of something, and is has to do with their graduation. Even with that feeling of mourning, this is a beautiful song and a visually striking music video. I’m in love. Time to play it over and over until I’m sick of it.

Third time through with just the song, not the video, I do feel more of the usual sound we get from THE BOYZ. Our vocalists are killing it, the melodies floating like flower petals on the breeze. And the rap lines are also suited so well to this more youthful concept we’ve got for this comeback. I can see this song being really popular in the summer for the overall vibes, but it’s also really good for the feeling of winters-moving-into-springs, something ending so something new can begin. This goes along with the graduation we see in the music video, but anyone can relate to this feeling, which makes this an even more powerful song and video combination.

시간마저 멈춰 버린 하루

Cuz I want it in the growing fantasy
I run toward you

The Rest of the Album

A short album means this part of the post gets to be super condensed! And technically we’ve heard both of these songs before this release day. Click on the titles to take you to the track on Spotify~

Hurt Me Less (환상통)

From the FILM and character clips, I was already expecting this more grungy style of music, and I love it. I think this style suits THE BOYZ so well, from their higher and lighter vocals to their more gravelly raps, they all sound great with an electric guitar. Everyone shines here, and even though this song is definitely a sadder vibe, it still gives a bit of hopefulness. The adlibs through the final chorus are so soft, sort of just floating through the background and leading the song into something sweeter.

Dear.

I’ve been in love with this song since it was released back in December, and now we get it on an album. This is definitely more of my usual style of favorite songs: slower and sweeter. I love a cute love ballad that is also a fan song. They sound so good over just the piano and soft drums. The harmonies in the last chorus are so beautiful that I cry every single time. A beautiful song, and I hope more people listen to this and realize how amazing THE BOYZ are as vocalists.

Final Thoughts

This is a beautiful collection of songs that all tell such a beautiful story together. Do I wish it was longer? Yeah, I wish it was 5 songs instead of 3, but I’ll take what I can get. I’m happy to have seen all three parts of this [phantasy] saga, which you can go back and see in my album reviews on Pt.1 and Pt.2 here. This does feel like a good ending to the trio of albums, even if it is short.

TL;DR: go listen to “Nectar” and become a fan of this amazing group. All the other THE B I’ve met so far in my short time as such a strong fan have been super nice and welcoming. It’s a great fandom for those with a good memory (because there are 11 members) and an appreciation for great choreography, stunning visuals, and angelic vocals.

K-Pop Roundup

K-Pop Roundup: Top Ten Releases of February 2024

We had a lot of great songs released in February, but this month on the blog, we’re going to look at my ten favorite releases, plus three honorable mentions. So, without further ado, let’s not waste any more time, and let’s get into it.

As usual, clicking the title of each song will take you to the track on Spotify. Or you can follow along with the Spotify playlist below, in ranking order.

10.

Cha Eunwoo – “STAY”

I can’t tell if this is a side of Eunwoo I just hadn’t acknowledged existing before, but this video gives so much more of him than I think I was used to seeing during Astro group promotions. This is a darker, more mature Eunwoo, and it suits him well. The song is softly dramatic and sad, which we all know is my favorite thing. This might be one of my favorite soloist-from-a-group debuts I’ve seen in a while.

9.

n.SSign – “Happy &”

This group is just a bunch of cuties, honestly. The brightness of this video perfectly matches the title. Their vocals are great, and the choreography is spot on for the concept. The editing of the video, including teeny-tiny members, is both trendy and retro at the same time. I like the overall tone of this video and song, becoming one of my new favorite graduation songs. And can we talk about the high note adlibs in the last chorus?? Stunning.

8.

EPEX – “졸업식 (Graduation Day)”

Speaking of graduation songs… This song came out the Monday after the high school I was teaching at had their graduation. I cried more than a little, knowing that it was both the end of their high school careers and the end of my time at that school. But this song was such a perfect release for EPEX. All the members are able to shine in their own ways. It’s so emotionally charged, giving a realistic look at what it’s like to reach an uncertain end of an era. “Big dream, big step, don’t be afraid.” Tears for days.

7.

ONLEE – “Spi-cy”

No one is surprised that one of my Boys Planet boys is on this list. Seunghwan’s voice suits this jazzy song so well, and that makes it even more pleasing to listen to. While this song doesn’t have a full music video, it still ranks high on the list because I love this style of music. I can just imagine Seunghwan dancing so smoothly to this, possibly with Soo-Yeony or just another backup dancer, in a loose-fitted suit. This song is so nice to listen to on the bus, staring out as the city passes by.

6.

BIBI – “밤양갱 (Bam Yang Gang)”

BIBI’s voice is so soothing, even when she’s singing a deceptively upbeat sounding song. My students (the new little kindy kiddos) love this song so much, mostly for how fun it sounds. I love this song for the witchy undertones, sad story, and animated rat. It’s such a good video for storytelling. If you watch the video with no sound, you’d guess it was some kind of twisted tale sung in a minor key instead of the sweet carousel-sounding tune we get with Bam Yang Gang. I love that juxtaposition.

5.

LE SSERAFIM – “Smart”

Am I constantly singing and dancing to this in my head these days? Yes. But I had to put it this far down on the list because I simply cannot be seen dancing around to this song in front of my kindergarten students. Even my elementary kiddos don’t need to see this. But it’s a great song, so it has to be this high on the list for the month. It’s also insanely popular and viral in Korea, since it gives idols an excuse to dance in a way that isn’t usually allowed for them. A great song, fun choreography, and the members look amazing in the video.

4.

TEN – “Nightwalker”

The first time I heard this song, I was walking between bus stops at night time, and I was definitely walking to the beat, feeling unstoppable and probably looking a little crazy. So of course I had to immediately come and watch the video. TEN has always been an phenomenal performer, and this is no exception. He has a very distinct monstrous style in this song, and it suits him so well. I think SM does a great job of letting their artists show their personal style in their solos to some extent. I will say, eyebrow-less TEN does haunt my nightmares, though. Beware.

3.

IU – “홀씨 (Holssi)”

Not only is this the cutest Tweety Bird collab that I’ve seen in the last 10 years, but it’s also just a really great song. IU could sing the phonebook and Korea would buy millions of copies, but this song in particular is really great. The message in the lyrics is about being exactly who you are with no regrets, and being proud of what makes you special. It’s such a good song, and having the children dance with IU just adds to the cuteness of the video. I love this style of IU’s vocals, because it’s so softly grunge which gives it the impression of being easier to sing. (It’s not, by the way.) Love this song.

2.

P1Harmony – “때깔 (Killin’ It)”

This song lives in my head rent-free, and any time I think I’m ‘killing it,’ I have to follow up the thought with the “dah-dah-dat DAH DAH” and the hand movements. I love the styling in this comeback, because it suits each member’s individual style so well. Theo in a half-up ponytail? I’m obsessed, and he’s not even my bias. The rap line really shines in this song, but the Keeho and his vocals really show out in the bridge. I can’t choose which member’s era this is, because it is just so quintessentially P1Harmony as a group that it would be impossible to choose just one. I can’t wait to get to see this live, hopefully at their concert at the end of April.

Honorable Mention 1.

CRAVITY – “Love or Die”

This song has earned CRAVITY their first music show win, and for a good reason: It’s just that good. There’s a driving beat under the chorus that pulls us straight into the rap, which is crazy powerful. The members’ voices all work so well together, and this concept and choreography suits the whole group well. Every time CRAVITY has a comeback, I wonder why I’m not a fan yet, and this is another one of their amazing comebacks that is pulling me closer and closer to being a real LUVITY. Genuinely just a really talented group that was given a really good song.

Honorable Mention 2.

NCTWish – “Wish”

Adding to the NCT lineup is the newest unit, WISH. Even younger and cuter than DREAM, this unit is filled with a fresh energy that I really enjoy. They’re so cute. This choreography is insane. The song is really cute, and I love the storyline of the members being really bad at acting as Cupid. But the reason they didn’t make the official top ten for February is that they’re just that to me right now: Cute. And you can’t make the top ten on cuteness alone.

Honorable Mention 3.

VROMANCE – “안녕 (Hello)”

After seeing Hyunkyu live in “We Will Rock You,” I had decided I wanted to be more present for VROMANCE’s comeback. And as much as I am in love with the vocals of this group, and no matter how much this song breaks my heart with how beautiful it is, I couldn’t move it any higher than it is. But I do still believe that everyone needs to hear how stunning these vocals are, because damn, I had chills the entire three minutes and fifty-eight seconds. Especially for Hyunkyu’s high notes.

1.

A.C.E – “My Girl”

Another non-surprise that I’ve chosen my favorite group’s long-awaited comeback as number one. This music video is beautifully made, and some of my friends are in the group of fans that are the background dancers, as well as members of the cast of “We Will Rock You” starring as the background actors, which makes this video even more special to me. Did I cry the first time I heard this song at their busking event? Absolutely. I cry the first time I hear most A.C.E songs. And this video is just so cute, and the song is very much one of my favorite styles, upbeat and dancey. Let’s not even talk about the flying angel scenes at the end, because they’re just… too much. I love A.C.E, and I’m so glad they’re back.

Final Thoughts

It is a lot harder than I expected it to be for me to rank the top songs in a month, but at least this is only 13 songs and not almost 40 like last month. I can handle this. And I got lucky that there weren’t that many releases in January. And any time a bias makes a comeback, they’re going to make the list. You can be assured of that. But just because a group or a song is low on my ranking, or doesn’t make the list at all, doesn’t mean I didn’t like the song!

Please tell me in the comments what your favorite songs released in January 2024 were, and let’s see if we agree on any of them. And be sure to subscribe to the blog so you don’t miss any of my upcoming posts. I’ve got a lot of events coming up, so make suer you’re around to hear about them.

Life in Korea

Where am I now?

Not Gimje, that’s where.

This past weeks, I’ve packed up and moved my entire life from Gimje to Seoul for my new job. A grueling 10.5 hour moving day later, all of my things now reside in my apartment with me in the south-east corner of Seoul.

I’m now working at a kindergarten/elementary English academy, and so far, it’s been really great. My students are incredibly adorable, my coworkers are super supportive and really nice humans, and I genuinely love this job. I am intensely exhausted, however, and it’s taking me way longer to acclimate to this new environment than I assume it would normally, because I’ve also gotten sick.

But I do really enjoy living here so far, and I’m already doing things I would never have done or been able to do in Gimje. I love the neighborhood I live in, even if I haven’t fully explored it yet.

I go into school every morning, come out every night, and then go straight home to have dinner, scroll through the social media posts I’ve missed throughout the day, write messages to parents about their adorable children, shower, and sleep. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but writing personalized messages to parents of 11 children almost every night can get repetitive and tiring. I did finally cook a full meal in my new apartment’s kitchen the other night: spaghetti and meat sauce. It was simple, but it was something I made for myself, and that makes it great.

I’m excited to be able to go to more events, concerts and musicals, pop-ups and buskings, now that I live in the city, and I’m hoping you all will still be around to listen to me go on and on about how much fun I’m having at all of these events.

So if you want to keep up with this newly refurbished life of mine, please be sure to subscribe to the blog. Or go follow me on Instagram for a closer look into the kinds of things I’ll be doing in the future.

And until I see you again, annyeong! –Annie👋

K-Pop Roundup

My Favorite Comebacks of January 2024

Happy New Year! The K-pop world has already given us so much great music in the first month of the year, so I’m excited to share this month’s roundup list with you. As usual, grab a snack and your headphones and settle in with me. The Spotify playlist is linked below, or you can click on each song’s name to go directly to each track.

January 2

ITZY – “Mr. Vampire”

I love this song so much. And now that I’m seeing the lyric translations, it’s giving the weirdest Twilight vibes, but I’m still into it. The beat is super catchy, and all four members sound great in this style. And the choreography is a lot of fun both to watch and to dance along with. The speak-rap half of the chorus works so well with the more melodic second half, so it’s no surprise that this went viral online as soon as it came out. A great song to start out 2024.

TWS (투어스) – “Oh mymy : 7s”

I can’t say I was fully looking forward to this group’s debut, but this video has me expecting great things from them. Some fans say TWS has an unfair advantage because they’re with Pledis, under HYBE labels, one of the top 4 companies in K-pop, but that’s just how this industry works. They get support from the other groups in the company because they’re in the company. Getting to see SEVENTEEN be the older-brother group is really nice. And when we finally get into the song part of the video, it’s very catchy. As a pre-release song, it shows a lot of their talents in vocals, rap, and dance, as well as stage presence. You can tell they’ve worked hard to get to this level. TWS (TWENTYFOURSEVEN:WITH:US) is going to do great things, and no one can tell me any different.

January 3

ATEEZ (Hongjoong, Seonghwa) – “MATZ”

Have I been purposefully avoiding this song like the plague because I’m honestly terrified of it? Yes. But it’s time to give our MATZ a chance to show what they’ve got. Hongjoong is known to be one of the best rappers of his generation, but I think Seonghwa’s rap skills are grossly underrated. He proves his talent in this song, and his tone is absolutely insane. And honestly, they are on fire in this video. I’m obsessed. The beat change in the bridge completely surprised me, but in the best way. Letting Hongjoong wear a grunge plaid suit and hat while Seonghwa is dressed like a disgraced prince was the best choice their stylists have ever made, showing both of their personalities so well through their outfits. I’m obsessed.

January 4

Jeong Sewoon – “Quiz”

I don’t usually follow Sewoon’s comebacks, but I’d been intrigued by the teaser photos. I’m glad I did watch this one, because it’s got a really chill vibe. I love his vocal tone; that airy huskiness is one of my favorites. Also, can anyone tell me why he’s reading Colleen Hoover in this video? The oranges are cute and whatever, but I’m more concerned with his reading choices. Bless him, he’s adorable in the outro film, trying to pick up all of his dropped oranges.

January 5

RIIZE – “Love 119”

RIIZE is back! Sohee is so cute at the beginning of the video, honestly. We’ve got another throwback-feeling song from this group, which seems to be part of their vibe: releasing songs that feel like they could have been put out in the 90s. I don’t know if I fully understand the video concept, but I do think it’s cute. The members look great, as usual, and the sound amazing. SM knew what they were doing with this group, for sure.

January 6

MINHO (SHINee) – “Stay for a night”

I think this is a great song, even if it’s not what I thought I had expected from Minho. It does still suit him. I think, as SHINee’s main rapper, people tend to forget that his singing voice is so soft and sweet. This song seems like just the perfect song for him, sweet and emotional, but not too young for him. It’s not the most memorable song on this list, but it’s nice to have a couple of sweet ballads on the list.

January 8

ITZY – “UNTOUCHABLE”

Now THIS is peak ITZY. We’ve been getting great releases from them for the last month straight, all leading up to this masterpiece. Vocals, choreography, stage presence, and visuals are all unmatched. They really prove how untouchable they are in terms of the level of success they’ve gained in their careers. Another immediately-viral hit, the “bam bam bam ba li” part is iconic, and the dance is stunning. And that’s not even to mention the amazing visual effects in the music video that make such a high quality backdrop for their performance. I’m amazed and in awe of how much I love this song. I’ve been dancing it in my sleep, it’s so good. 10/10, no notes.

SF9 – “비보라 (BIBORA)”

I love the vibe of this song so much, but that’s not surprising, knowing how much I love an upbeat sad song. The members of SF9 have outdone themselves in terms of how perfect this song is. Their music usually has this sexy upbeat feeling that lends itself to elegance but also to hard-hitting choreography, and BIBORA doesn’t disappoint. I’ve heard this in so many cafes and marts here in Korea already, and it’s impossible not to dance along with it every time I hear this song. Stunning.

January 8

8TURN – “RU-PUM PUM (러펌펌)”

8TURN is giving me B.A.P Warrior flashbacks with every member being blond. It’s a choice, for sure. This isn’t my usual style of music, but it’s catchy. I will say: if you’ve got tinnitus like me, there’s a really high-pitched buzzing synth in the background bit of the instrumental that sets my ears ringing for a good few minutes after the song ends. But the vocals 8TURN gives are almost good enough to make me forget about the ringing. (Almost.) Their performance is really eye-catching, because they’ve perfected their specific dance style so well. It’s a good song, even if I can’t listen to it very often.

January 10

OnlyOneOf – “dOpamine”

I’m not exaggerating when I say I was looking forward to this comeback the most in January. OnlyOneOf has come back (finally) with a song that acts almost as a confession of maddening love. I won’t lie: it’s the physical beauty of all six members that tends to draw in fans, but they really show off their vocal and performance talent, once you can get past the laundromat-level washboard abs they’re giving in their all-denim outfits. And Junji’s high note? Mind-blowing. This song feels like what I imagine the actual chemical dopamine would act like if it were human. I love this song so much.

ALL(H)OURS – “으랏차차 (GOTCHA)”

I don’t know how I missed any lead-up to this debut, but I’m glad I caught it on a couple of idols’ Instagram stories. Because this is an insanely powerful debut song for a new group. This group is overflowing with talent. The vocalists are so good, I literally got chills during the bridge. The rappers bring a darker edge to the group. And the choreography is so intricate that I’m super impressed with the members’ stamina to be able to perform this so well. ALL(H)OURS, you’ve got a new fan here. I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.

ATEEZ (Yeosang, San, Wooyoung) – “IT’s You”

Was I also terrified to watch this ATEEZ unit video? Yes. With three of the strongest dancers in the group together, it was hard for me to expect what would come of this unit. I could never have expected this. Let Yeosang sing more! He killed his first verse. And San’s soft vocals are hypnotic. Oop, the chorus is exactly what I expected from these guys, and perfect for Wooyoung. So sexy, but in a powerfully elegant way. San’s second verse is overpowered, but I’m into it. Wooyoung can fly, apparently. Yeosang’s bridge and chorus are too good. This unit is way too perfect. Thank you KQ and ATEEZ for this masterpiece.

January 11

TRENDZ – “위로위로 (Go Up)”

Okay, I needed something more playful after that last one. TRENDZ is perfect for a high energy bop. And I obviously love this one because the lyrics are heart-breaking. The members’ bright vocal tones bring up the energy even more, contrasting beautifully with the “please don’t break up with me” vibe of the lyrics. This group deserves more love and attention for being able to flawlessly execute this difficult choreography while also belting out this sad bop. I love TRENDZ, and you should, too.

January 15

NMIXX – “DASH”

I”m in love with this song. All the girls sound great on this song, their unique vocal tones fitting perfectly with the jazzy funk undertones. I think I’d love to hear this song done with a live band. (They did that here.) The “change up” part getting lighter and brighter was fun, and shows off more of their versatility. Overall, I’m in love with the way this group is able to mix so many different styles together into a cohesive final song like this. Forever in awe of Lily and Haewon’s vocals.

YENA (최예나) – “Good Morning”

I wasn’t sure what I expected from the teaser photos for this comeback, but Yena’s uplifting message in the song contrasts beautifully with the grunge rock looks she shows off visually. The heavy drums and electric guitar bring a higher energy than a synth instrumental would have, which has made this an immediate addition to my morning ‘getting ready’ playlist. She looks great, sounds great, and gives a great message. This song is really amazing.

January 16

HUI (PENTAGON) – “흠뻑 (Hmm BOP)”

Can you believe the talent they were able to fit into this man’s tiny body? Insane. Also, where was he hiding those abs? To have written and composed such a stunning track (and album) is mind boggling. But this song perfectly showcases all of the unique parts of his voice, but of course, who knows his voice better than the man himself? If I were going to write an album for myself, I’d make sure to show off everything I’m proud of, too. Well done, Hoetaek. I’m glad you finally got to showcase your talent in a solo debut.

SISTAR19 – “NO MORE (MA BOY)”

The queens are back! I’m so glad we’ve got more music from SISTAR19. They prove without a doubt why they’re so formidable with this comeback. The visuals and choreography are so addictive, and the vocals are heavenly. I’m glad we got to hear more of Bora on this song than we used to on older SISTAR19 tracks. The outfits are a bit… odd, but they still look great. I love that Hyolyn bedazzles her tattoo for the video and on stage so that the TV stations will let her show it on broadcast. This song has lived in my head non-stop since its release, it’s so good.

January 17

ATEEZ (Yunho, Mingi) – “Youth”

Oh no, another ATEEZ unit here to rip my heart out. This time, it’s our tall babies, Yunho and Mingi. I wasn’t expecting such a soft song from them, if I’m honest, but it works for them. Yunho’s soft vocals suit this style so well, and Mingi’s low-tone rap and husky vocals complements him so well. But can we just take a second on the choreography?? The sharpness mixed with the soft lines and body rolling… I’m into it, don’t get me wrong, but this contrast of vibes is a lot to take in. Another beautiful ATEEZ unit song, and one I’m going to have to listen to a million more times.

January 18

Solar (MAMAMOO) – “Love Has Gone”

It’s almost unfair for someone this beautiful to also sing so beautifully. This is such a beautiful song that there’s almost no other words that can be used to describe it. Beautiful, powerful, heart-breaking. The melody of this song feels almost more like musical theatre than it does a K-pop ballad, but it shows off all of the beauty of Solar’s voice perfectly.

January 19

IVE – “All Night (Feat. Saweetie)”

I’ll be honest: I don’t love this song. It feels very gimmicky and made-for-TikTok. I do like Saweetie’s verse, because her autotuned voice matches the style of the song more than I think the IVE members’ voices in unison do. It’s giving both too much and too little at the same time. They all look amazing, but the song just doesn’t hit as hard as I’m assuming they wanted it to. In fact, this is one of the only songs on this list that I’ve included even though I couldn’t watch through to the end of the video. I want to know what you think about this song, so leave your thoughts in the comments below.

H1-KEY – “Thinkin’ About You”

H1-KEY’s vocals have been going viral ever since the Riina and Hwiseo’s participation in Queendom: Puzzle, and I’m a little upset I didn’t start listening to them earlier. This song is beautiful, and their sweet voices add so much emotion to it that I’ve got chills from their harmonies. I don’t often fall in love with English songs by idol groups, but this one is so beautiful that it is immediately going on my Moody Playlist.

January 22

(G)I-DLE – “Wife”

…Someone say “jk.” I saw so many opinions on this song before I ever watched it myself. And now I’m just wondering why they decided on this as the pre-release single. I think the one thing that bothers me the most is that they’re not lip-syncing along to the song for most of the video, which is just extra uncomfortable. And I just don’t like this song at all. It’s catchy, but I think it’s going to be one of those earworms that goes viral immediately and gets on everyone’s nerves.

TWS (투어스) – “첫 만남은 계획대로 되지 않아 (plot twist)”

Alright, official debut song! I’m obsessed with this tiny-group concept with them dancing on top of the to-do list. Also, the whole video concept of them wanting to talk to someone and impress them is so cute. I love the fresh and cute concept for a rookie group. The members are so cute in the video, and their performance is so good. I couldn’t help but smile throughout the whole song, because it’s so perfect for a debut. And honestly, I’m glad they chose a younger concept, because so many new boy groups are going for the manly, sexy concepts super early in their careers. It’s a nice way for them to stand out.

AB6IX – “GRAB ME”

I love AB6IX. The vocals are vocal-ing so hard in this comeback. I’m loving this concept and musical style for them. The switch up in the post-chorus caught me by surprise, but I think it’s still perfect for the song. The bridge is stunning, flowing into the adlibs over the final chorus in such a sweet and energetic way. There’s a lot of English in this song, which makes it easier for international fans to sing along, and I think that was a great choice for them for this comeback. (Go vote for Woong on Build Up!)

EVNNE – “UGLY”

I’ve already shared a lot of my thoughts on this comeback by EVNNE in my Album Review post, but I just can’t stop listening to this song. Every time I watch the video, I catch something I didn’t notice before. I’m amazed by how talented these boys are, and so proud of their success with promotions so far.

January 23

I.M – “Slowly (Feat. Heize)”

I love I.M’s more vocal songs because his deep, husky voice is so unique. This one is so beautiful, and perfect for winter. And Heize’s voice pairs perfectly with his, giving this dreamy, otherworldly feeling to the whole song. This song makes me want to listen to it in a smoky jazz bar with a drink in hand. I love this style for him, and I can’t wait to listen to this a million times until I get sick of it.

SEOLA (WJSN) – “Without U”

This song is so good, and I’m glad Seola finally gets a chance to show off her vocal skills solo. She’s beautiful, and this almost 90s-feel throwback suits her so well. I can’t say I fully understand the concept of the video, but it’s good enough that it makes you want to watch again and again to try to figure it out. The song is good, and I hope we get more music from Seola in the future.

January 24

IU – “Love wins all”

I’ve been looking forward to IU making new music for what feels like ages. Finally, she’s back, giving us a cinematic masterpiece to go with her song. Wait, why am I crying? The video is so beautiful, that I forgot to listen to the song the first time through. The key change had me sobbing, it was so beautifully tied into both the song and the video. The imagery at the end of the video is so intensely emotional, with the video camera dying and the falling of their wedding outfits… If this is her pre-release, I can’t wait for the full album “The Winning” to come out soon. She really is the queen for a reason.

CIX – “Lovers or Enemies”

Not only was I super excited for this comeback, but getting the song to start out with Hyunsuk and Yonghee’s vocals was such a sweet choice. And Seunghun’s lower register is absolutely one of my new favorite things. (Go vote for Seunghun on Build Up!) This is such a good song, and I really love the video concept of the members being cyborgs. Beautifully done, CIX.

KIM JAE HWAN (김재환) – “Ponytail”

I don’t know what I expected from Jaehwan, but it wasn’t this. I’m into it, though! I’ve loved his vocals since his days in Wanna One, so I’m not surprised at how amazing he sounds on this song. The rap(?) verse is stunning, and somehow still matches the rest of the song and Jaehwan’s overall vibe so well. It does make me want to wear a ponytail more often so I can imagine he’s singing this phenomenal song about me.

ATEEZ (Jongho) – “Everything”

Our killer vocal maknae finally gets his turn. I’m always stunned by how beautiful Jongho’s voice is, but a song like this really showcases his talent. If he sang every OST for a drama, I’d watch just for his voice. And this music video plays out like a drama and I love it. I’m not crying, you’re crying. It’s beautiful. The high notes and the heart break. Everything. Was not expecting all the fire at the end, but pop off, king.

January 26

VCHA – “Girls of the Year”

This is one of the debuts I’ve actually been looking forward to, as far as girl groups go. VCHA, the group coming from JYP Entertainment’s survival show, A2K. I’m so glad that this song and video are so strong for their official debut. I’ll be honest, I was almost in tears, so proud of these girls for showing that they’ve got what it takes to be in the same industry as idols who have trained for years. This song is catchy, and I love the choreography.

January 29

(G)I-DLE – “Super Lady”

Going into this, all I wanted was something more serious than “Wife” was. And we’re immediately thrown into Soyeon’s insane vocals with metallic silver visuals. This is definitely higher-quality and bigger-scale than I expected. Am I the biggest fan of the song? Not really, but it is catchy and I do like the message of being a strong woman. It’s immediate meme-ability has already made it viral here in Korea.

January 30

VANNER (배너) – “JACKPOT”

This song is giving 2010s K-pop with a hard rock edge, and I love it. These guys are so talented, and I genuinely had a lot of fun watching this music video and trying ot follow the storyline. I love the visuals, colored mostly black and red, with all the gambler/gangster/cowboy(?) vibes sprinkled in. It’s a great video, and I love that Taehwan gets to show off his vocals, reminding fans how amazing he is. (Go vote for Taehwan on Build Up!) This is an insane comeback for VANNER, and I love it.

January 31

YUGYEOM (GOT7) – “LA SOL MI”

My GOT7 maknae! Good to know I still love his unique vocal tone after so many years with him. I like that this song is a bit softer than his solo stuff usually is, mixed with the groove that accompanies most songs Yugyeom has a hand in creating. The floral visuals are beautiful, and I honestly just enjoy watching him drive a pickup truck across a field. This is a great song for the (hopefully soon) beginning of spring, and I’m going to add it to my travel playlists immediately.

Final Thoughts

Wow, that was a lot of great music. I’m glad we got so many great songs in January, but I am quite tired after all of that.

Which leads me to my next point! Starting with February’s Roundup, I will no longer be listing all of my favorites from the month. Instead, I’ll do my top ten plus two honorable mentions. It makes it easier for me to write these on time (not two weeks into the month, oops) and easier for you all to read as well. So look forward to a much shorter post next month!

So you don’t miss out on the new, shorter roundups, make sure you’re subscribed to the blog! And leave in the comments below your thoughts on January’s music.

“UGLY” Music Video Review

My immediate thoughts after watching this video for the first time were: “Oh no, there goes my bias line.” But also: “Good on you, Jellyfish, for giving our boys a badass video.” Between the visuals the members are serving and the visuals of the video sets and lighting, the CG video effects are even more stunning. This music video is stunning in so many ways, and that’s not even mentioning the vocals and choreography.

With a fairly even line distribution throughout, all seven members get their time to shine. With Keita, Lee Jeonghyeon, Jihoo leading the rap, Mun Junghyun as sub vocal and sub rapper, and Seungeon, Hanbin, and Yunseo holding down the vocals, all of the members have their own killing parts. But I’m pretty sure my favorite parts are Hanbin’s bridge, Seungeon’s high note, and Yunseo’s half of the final chorus.

If we’re going to talk about the performance, then let’s take a quick look over at their Performance 37 video. The stage presence these boys bring is electric. The choreography perfectly matches the strength of the song: sharp and hard-hitting in some parts, and smoother for the vocal lines. There is so much strength in the performance, and it really highlights how talented these boys are in all aspects of their performance.

I love this song, and it only makes me even more excited about this comeback. But “UGLY” is only the first track on the album…

The Rest of the Album

Let’s take a look at the other four tracks on the album. As usual, click on the song titles to take you to the track on Spotify.

2. SYRUP

I think this song really suits the styles of all the members, especially highlighting the rap line on the verse. The chorus doesn’t hit the way I expected it to from the vibes of the verse and pre-chorus, but it’s still good. The second pre-chorus, with the mid-line melody, backing vocals, and the floating harmonies and adlibs, is pure magic. I can already imagine how amazing the dance break would be just before the last chorus. Overall, it’s a great song, with a fun beat that makes you want to dance along.

3. K.O. (Keep On)

Oh, so this is the background song from the teasers. Got it. This song has the same vibe that we’re starting to associate with EVNNE, with the cool synth and the tappy high-hats. I like that it’s quite a bit brighter in overall tone than “UGLY,” while also still sounding uniquely theirs. Highlighting the strong vocalists, Seungeon, Hanbin, and Yunseo, this song immediately moves upward in my list of favorites.

4. Chase

The beginning of this song sounds very disorganized, but it eventually reveals itself to be a sort of distorted bass guitar underlying the first half of the verse. That deep warble disappears in the pre-chorus, and comes back for the chorus, in a drop that honestly confused me a good bit. This is definitely the weirdest song on the album, in terms of all of the vibe shifts, but it’s still really good. I’m going to have to listen to it a million more times so that it makes more sense. The vocals are still killer, though.

5. Festa

I got immediate chills when this song started, but that’s what the sliding synth does to me. And especially since it’s balanced well with the vocals. We’re still able to hear the brightness of the boys’ vocals over the synth, even throughout the chorus. Leaving the rap to the second verse, this song follows more of the generic K-pop song pattern, and since this one was composed by Keita, it makes so much sense. He understands what makes a great song, and he does it well. I think it’s also a great song to show off how well all seven voices work together in unison and in harmonies. This will be a really fun end-of-concert song to jump around to while the members go around the audience to greet the fans up close; I can see it now.

Final Thoughts

Alright, well, this album is definitely a way for the seven members of EVNNE to show off their insane talents. I hope we keep getting more music from this group, because they’re amazing. My favorite track is either “UGLY” or “K.O.”, because they just sound like EVNNE to me.

Life in Korea

In My 31st Year

Happy Birthday to ME! Somehow, I’ve made it to my 31st birthday, so let’s look back at what I wanted to do in my 30th year, and make some goals for this upcoming year.

30th Year Goals:

  • Get TOPIK Level 5 (at least)

I did that! Was it just barely a 5? Yes. But it’s a 5 nonetheless. I still want to study more and get my writing to a higher level, but I’m pleased with the increase in my score from two years ago.

  • Finish all of the certifications (and stop adding more)

Ha… I did finish the ones I had started, but I also added a couple more in the last year, just to add more to my various resumes. I just like learning stuff.

  • Keep on track with weekly blog updates

Well, not weekly, but I definitely posted more in the last year than the year before. I got a little crazy in October with a million posts all around the same time, and sort of burned myself out, but I’m getting back into it again. I want to keep posting more regularly this-coming year as well.

  • Go to even more concerts

DONE. From 11-ish events in 2022 to 26 in 2023, that’s a 136% increase. Insane. I love it.

  • Visit some new places in Korea

Yeah, the only new places I visited were Ilsan for the Boys Planet recording, and Yeosu when I went with the other teachers at my school. Because of all the concerts, I spent a lot of my travel time in Seoul.

  • Try to have two no-spend days per week

I wasn’t as good at tracking my spending as I wanted to be, so I’m not certain I kept to this one. But I know there were more days I didn’t spend any money than the year before, so I’ll take this one as a win.

  • Increase my financial savings

Yeah… No. I’m not even going to touch on this one.

  • Stay consistent with my journaling

While I didn’t journal every single day, I did write on most days. My Hobonichi Techo kept me organized this last year, and now I’ve got this system fully set in stone, I’ve already been a lot more consistent in writing at least a little bit every day in 2024 so far.

  • Cook at home more often

Yeah, I didn’t do that, either.

  • Take more pictures with my friends

I took some pictures with my friends, but not as many as I probably could have. I take the pictures, I don’t have my picture taken.

  • Read at least 20 books

I didn’t track my reading very well, so I’m not sure if I did this or not. I can name at least 12 off the top of my head that I read, though.

  • Talk to my sisters more often

While we do go a long time without talking to each other, I did call my twin more than I had the year before.

  • Learn and remember all my students’ names

Don’t tell them… but yeah, I didn’t do that either. I remembered most of them, but even some of my favorite students’ names escape me sometimes.

  • Actually start learning Korean history

And I didn’t do this either. I do know some random historical facts now that I didn’t last year, but I wouldn’t say I technically started learning history. That’s fine.

31st Year Goals

I want to keep my goals even more simple for this year, and I want to limit myself to fewer goals, since I didn’t reach a lot of them last year. So… Here’s what I want to do in this next year of my life:

  • Keep up with the different series on the blog (What I Did, Monthly Roundups, Welcome to the Stage, Album/Song Reviews)
  • Stay in touch with friends worldwide
  • Take a real vacation at least once
  • See more musicals (at least two)
  • Read at least 50 books
  • Write another draft of my fantasy novel
  • Two no-spend days per week
  • Try one new recipe per month
  • Fully clean my apartment every two weeks

I only have nine for this year, and most of them deal with making and keeping up with habits, or having new experiences. I enjoyed the experiences I had in the last year and want to keep having new ones, even if it means working around a new work schedule.

Final Thoughts

I am so thankful to all of you who have stuck with me through my 30th year, and the second year of the blog. I don’t know if I can even express how thankful I am for the things I’ve been able to do and all of the amazing people I’ve been able to meet.

If you’re one of the people I’ve met this year, or even an old friend, leave a comment down below of a memory you have of us in the past year. I’d love to look back on some memories with all of you. Also, leave any suggestions for things you want to know about life in Korea, or K-pop, tarot, books, whatever, from me down in the comments as well.

Be sure to subscribe to the blog so you don’t miss any upcoming posts. I’ve got a few planned and prepared already, and I’m excited to get into this new year of K-Pop and general life in Korea.

Tarot for 2024: A Look Ahead

The Spread

This is a 12-card spread that I like to try out every year, just to know what I should generally expect. As we go through each card, I’ll be writing my interpretations of the card and of what I think it might mean for me in my life. Just like last year, we’re taking a quick peek into what my future could hold this year.

If you’d like for me to do this reading for you as well, find me on my Instagram and send me a message. I’d love to help you find some answers about your own future.

The spread I’ll be using is pictured below:

Now, let’s get started.

1. The previous year in summary

In the Knight of Wands, we get a feeling of high energy, feeling fully charged and ready to take on life and get things done. This card usually leads to fun and a sense of adventure when it comes to doing anything.

For me, this shows me that, throughout my 26 events, I definitely took the time to just enjoy being somewhere and having fun. And I did, I really did enjoy the last year. I had a lot of fun, and I met a lot of new friends that I will continue to have fun with.

2. Lessons learned from the past year

The 4 of Swords is a warning to remember to rest, taking time away from the rest of the world to reflect and recharge. Taking that time away is necessary in order to keep the mind sharp, so it’s important not to overdo the fun parts of life.

If you remember my 2023 reading, the 4 of Swords showed up in position 11, my most important lesson of the year. Seeing it pop up here as a lesson learned makes me feel like I actually achieved that goal. I’ve learned to say no to doing things that I know will drain my energy, and I know that sometimes it’s better to have a weekend where you don’t leave the house rather than spending the time, energy, and money I’d have to for whatever concert/event I’m missing out on.

3. Aspirations for the next 12 months

When we see The World, she usually represents a feeling of unity, wholeness, and harmony. Not only with other people, but the World inspires a uniting of the inner and outer worlds. She asks of us to not only observe but also to participate in the ever-moving rhythms of life, adding that special spice that only we can.

For me, this feels like I need to find my place in my changing circumstances, and figure out how best I can both assimilate into new routines and patterns but also to give my own unique perspective to wherever I land. She is calling me to find my ‘new normal’ and to make sure I don’t get too swept up in it to remember who I am and what makes me special.

4. What empowers you in reaching your aspirations

Strength, as a card, is pretty self-explanatory. She not only recognizes physical strength, but also calls into play your inner strength, as well as the compassion you hold for the people around you.

For me, this is pretty simple: as long as I remember just how strong I am, mentally, physically, emotionally, I should be able to more easily reach any goal I set in front of myself. Strength also asks me to stay calm in the face of any struggle, bolstered by my inner strength and fortitude and my ability to make it through.

5. What may stand in the way of reaching your aspirations

The Knight of Cups is one of the cards I usually read as a person, usually young and in touch with their emotions. This person is attractive and charming to the people around them and asks you to listen to your heart rather than your head.

This feels like I’m going to meet someone who is very emotional and asks me to follow my sensibilities instead of my senses. This person is going to be a strong distraction, taking my attention and energy away from the goals I’ve set and the plans I’ve made. The Knight of Cups can also represent some sort of emotional or creative project, so I’ll have to be careful of letting any sort of ‘passion projects’ take priority over my To Do Lists.

6. Your relationships and emotions in the coming year

The 8 of Wands usually shows very quick movement when I see it in readings, but this time I’m feeling more of the growth energy rather than the swiftness. There’s an energy pushing forward and fostering a steady, positive growth, even if it does come along suddenly.

As much as I am open to relationships and emotional connections, I find that I do tend to self-sabotage them after a while. With the 8 of Wands on my side, I see that 2024 may bring my own personal slow-burn romance that could bring a new level of energy to the rest of my life. Either that, or I become more and more open with my own emotions, which could guide me towards new relationships. I suppose only time will tell.

7. Your career, work and finances

When we see the 9 of Pentacles, it usually symbolizes the joy of security and freedom that material wealth can bring. Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it can support it. There is a short period of rest after a long difficult situation that you fully intend to enjoy in celebration.

Gods, I was hoping to get a good card here. The 9 of Pentacles shows me that, no matter what it is, I will have a job that can support me financially, in a way that can help to bring peace and freedom to me. I hope this is correct, because I can’t stay in this paycheck-to-paycheck feeling for much longer without going absolutely insane with worry. But this card also reminds me that it is okay to have a treat-yo’self day every now and then, not all the time. It’s okay to enjoy the money you have without feeling guilty about every penny spent.

8. Your health and well-being

The Emperor is a card that is all about control. He represents authority, regulation, and organization. He is a strategic thinker, and therefore acts rationally and according to what is best for the greater good.

To me, this sounds like I’m finally going to get my health under control in 2024. And honestly, thank gods. I’ve been somewhat-sick since September, and it’s time to figure this out and get better so I can sing again. But also, having more control over my general well-being by strategically thinking is another huge goal to add to my list for the year.

9. Your spiritual energy and inner fulfillment

The Knight of Pentacles is a symbol of hard work; taking on daily tasks and responsibilities with the patience to accomplish every specific project. There is a reliability and commitment seen in this Knight that allows you to fall into routine and trust that things will get done.

Okay, so maybe this deck is still a bit shady. I do need to make my spiritual work more of a part of my daily routines, but she didn’t need to be so loud about it. But then again, I think that may be true for others as well. It’s important to make sure you’re taking responsibility for your own inner fulfillment, and if that means putting it in your very tight schedule for an hour of meditation and journaling every other day, just to keep your mind and energy clear, so be it. It’ll become habit, and then I/you won’t have to work so hard just to be able to clear things.

10. What you most need to focus on in the year ahead

The 4 of Wands shows a celebration with friends and family whether or not there is a special occasion, but also a feeling of being relaxed at home. This card can also represent reaching important milestones in projects.

For me, this is telling me to remember to spend time with my friends, even if it’s just something simple on a random Tuesday. My friends are going to help make this transition a lot less stressful for me, for sure. I’ll also need to make sure to keep my home feeling clear and relaxed. Once there is a solid foundation with my friends and my housing, then I’ll be set to reach even more milestones in my life, both in personal and professional projects.

11. Your most important lesson for the coming year

The 6 of Pentacles is an interesting card because it almost has two different meanings, depending on which side you envision yourself on. But generally, it means you’ve got a good relationship with your finances, that your income and expenses are balanced and there’s not much stress coming from money. There’s an emphasis on being self-sufficient enough to take care of yourself as well as being able to share with others.

It doesn’t surprise me that the card representing my most important lesson for the year has to do with finances. That’s one area in my life that I don’t feel like I have much control over, so I’ve got to start taking that more seriously. Especially with the big job transition coming up, I’m going to have to be a lot more level-headed when it comes to money so that I can get to that point of balance between income and expense.

12. Overall, where are you headed in the next 12 months

When we see the 3 of Pentacles, it usually symbolizes teamwork and the successful completion of goals once you’re working with a team. There’s a combining of skills that helps bring this success in a way you couldn’t have done alone.

Well, this is comforting. I see this as me finding my ‘tribe’ as some would call it, and figuring out how to combine all of our skills in ways that helps all of us succeed. I hope that this is a team I create at my new job (whatever that ends up being) that can work together to make sure all of us are successful at whatever projects we take on. After all, team work makes the dream work.

Final Thoughts

Well… let’s hope that this year turns out to be as great as my tarot deck seems to think it will be. I’ll keep you posted.
